MARIO CARERE, ISS ENVIRONMENT and HEALTH DEPARTMENT/WFD CIS EXPERT
Mario Carere is a Biologist, Senior Researcher at the Department of Environment and Health of the Italian Institute of Health. He has chaired the expert group of the European Commission “CMEP-Chemical Monitoring and Emerging Pollutants” and is currently co-chairing the “WG Chemicals” in the context of the Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). He has coordinated and contributed to European guidelines and technical reports about water and biota chemical monitoring, environmental quality standards derivation, and use of effect-based methods in the WFD.

Caroline Whalley, European Environment Agency
Lead author on the recent WWA report “Chemicals in European Waters” (EEA Report No 18/2018), Caroline is well informed on why compounds are a cause for regulatory concern at a European scale and what measures may be effective in reducing inputs to the aquatic environment.

Arben Merkoçi, ICREA Professor & Director of the Nanobioelectronics & Biosensors Group at Institut Català de Nanociencia i Nanotecnologia (ICN2)
Prof. Merkoçi’s research is focused on the design and application of cutting-edge nanotechnology and nanoscience-based biosensors. These nanobiosensors are based on the integration of biological molecules (DNA, antibodies, cells and enzymes) and other (bio)receptors with micro- and nanostructures and application in diagnostics, environmental monitoring or safety and security.
